Official Opening Ceremony for the ERWEKA Quality Control Laboratory at the University of Frankfurt

Another milestone in the training of pharmaceutical scientists in Frankfurt.

On the 2nd of July, new quality control facilities in the Institute of Pharmaceutical Technology at the University of Frankfurt were officially opened. The facilities, which provide state-of-the-art instrumentation for quality control of solid dosage forms, were made possible by a sponsorship from Erweka GmbH in the sum of €50,000. Erweka, which is one of the leading manufacturers of testing equipment and development scale manufacturing equipment worldwide, has its headquarters near to Frankfurt in Heusenstamm (www.erweka. de). Mr.Werner Müller, CEO of Erweka, described the donation as "necessary to provide Frankfurt students with a practical knowledge of the latest equipment and thereby to secure their competitiveness in the global work environment".
The quality control labs are an essential part of the Institute's dedication to bringing GMP concepts into the Pharmacy curriculum. The Institute enjoys the status of being the only Pharmacy program in Germany to possess a GMP licence and has worked hard to upgrade its production facilities over the last years. Documentation has been another focus area, and thanks to a similar donation from a local wholesaler (Phoenix GmbH) a study center with individual computer learning facilities has also been put in place. With the addition of the quality control laboratories, Frankfurt is in the unique position of being able to provide an elective course in GMP to Pharmacy undergraduates. Naturally, graduate students and research projects are also beneficiaries of the new facilities.
Dr. Sabine Kopp, secretary of the WHO Expert Committee on Safety and Quality: medicines, presented the opening ceremony lecture on the topic of "Safety and Quality of Medicines in Developing Countries". Her committee works on important issues such as regulation of GMP, approval requirements and quality control of multi-source products in developing countries as well as tackling the problem of drug counterfeiting, which is growing at an alarming rate worldwide.
